What is Echo?

Created through the collaboration between Cisco, H-FARM, composer Dardust and set designer Paolo Fantin, Echo brings together art, music and artificial intelligence, transforming individual emotions into a shared and evolving experience.

Echo is the immersive installation bringing the Venice Pavilion to life at the 2026 Art Biennale. A journey beneath the surface of the lagoon, where a fragmented, submerged piano gives form to the unconscious as it rises, and another Venice slowly emerges through memory, emotion and sound. Visitors leave behind a fragment of themselves, which returns in the form of words, colour and sound.

In Minor Keys

The curatorial project places the individual at the centre once more, restoring a sense of proportion between human life, the elements of the earth and the sky above.

It returns attention to relationships, to the spaces in which they are born, and to those small things that can carry the greatest meaning. Some emotions do not arrive loudly. They surface slowly—in a memory, a hesitation, a word left unspoken. Following the untimely death of Koyo Kouoh in May 2025, and with the full support of her family, the Venice Biennale chose to realise the exhibition according to the project she had conceived—preserving, celebrating and sharing the vision to which she had devoted such care.

Echo begins in these minor keys. Visitors are invited to pause, listen and leave behind an emotional trace. The installation receives it and allows it to reappear through words, colour and sound, becoming part of a composition that changes with every encounter. There is no predetermined path and no single meaning to uncover. Echo does not tell visitors what to feel. It creates the space for something within them to emerge.

Persistent Notes

The exhibition invites visitors to tune into Venice’s deepest frequencies.

Il Padiglione Venezia ai Giardini della Biennale

Those rising from its foundations, carried by the stories of its inhabitants, shaped by the materials that sustain it and by the corrosive force that continually transforms the city.

Curated by Giovanna Zabotti, with the participation of Denis Isaia and Cesare Biasini Selvaggi, Note persistenti turns the Venice Pavilion into a field of resonance between past, present and future.

The exhibition unfolds through four symbolic dimensions of the city—the submerged, the domestic, the mythological and the collective—guiding visitors through a sensory and narrative journey in which Venice is not simply observed, but listened to.

Not letters, but the soul

Echo translates every visitor's emotional trace into four languages—word, colour, sound, and matter. Beyond facts, it captures how Venice is felt: through reflections, sounds, and lingering emotions.

The Word.
Every journey begins with a word.

A memory, an emotion, a fragment of Venice. Echo listens to your story through an AI semantic engine rooted in the literary soul of the city. Guided by seven canonical works—from Mann and James to Brodsky—the system translates your emotional trace into a unique poetic verse. Your story returns not as an explanation, but as a new intimate voice shaped by Venice itself.

The Colour.
Some emotions can only be perceived.

Grounded in perceptual research, Echo translates every emotional trace into one of ten carefully crafted color palettes, each corresponding to a distinct feeling. As your poetic verse appears, it is accompanied by its own chromatic atmosphere. This visual echo gives form to the emotion you shared, turning hidden feelings into a living lightscape within the pavilion space.

The Sound.
Some emotions need to be heard.

Echo’s soundscape stems from SommersiVo, an original composition by Dardust. From this piece, a generative library of forty sound motifs was created, each linked to a specific nuance. With every interaction, the piano draws from this archive to resonate with your trace. The result is an unrepeatable melody shaped solely by the feeling that brought it to life.

The Matter.
Beneath every city lies another one.

Invisible, remembered, felt. At the center of Echo, a fragmented, submerged piano embodies the unconscious—where memories settle before surfacing. Designed by Paolo Fantin and built by Teatro La Fenice, the installation transforms the space into a physical landscape where light, sound, and raw matter react together in real time to every visitor's presence.

From Emotion to Echo

Initial Emotion

Visitors entrust an emotion to the installation, expressing it through writing or drawing. This input becomes a means of sharing a thought, a memory or an inner image deeply connected to Venice.

AI Analysis

The AI listens and interprets the visitor’s thoughts through two simultaneous lenses. It processes the written text or the lines of the drawing, decoding not only their literal meaning but, above all, their emotional and symbolic content.

Dual Interpretation

1

The dream-like synthesis

The system generates a new phrase, producing a poetic reflection based on a ‘narrative bible’ (a corpus trained on selected books and texts).

2

Emotional mapping

The AI associates an ‘emotional warmth’ with the identified feeling, selecting one of 10 emotional colours and interweaving it with one of 40 original sound motifs composed by Dardust.

Immersive Presentation

The process culminates in the physical space. The output generated by the AI is transformed into a visual and audio projection that envelops the user, creating an immersive, ephemeral and deeply personal experience.
